<p>The word spirituality fills me with anxiety. As the member of our department of religious studies who teaches contemporary religion, (New Age, popular culture, Asian religion in America, that sort of thing…) I should be a spirituality expert, ready to use the word as a clever retort for my cynical family members, as a piece of sage advice for my sincere, confused graduating majors, or as a contextualizing quote for the religion writer from our local paper.</p>
<p>In other words, I feel I should have a handle on this whole spirituality thing, but I really don’t. When I think about spirituality, I ask myself, throat tightening: what do I need to know? What conversations about it should I be injecting myself into? Who’s writing about it? Whose brilliant new definition of it is so broad, or so narrow, or so unexpected, or so obvious, or so self-conscious, or so un-self-conscious, that we academics can no longer talk meaningfully about spirituality without nodding metaphorically or literally in the direction of this exciting scholar?</p>
<p>I can toss off an article on a particular religious group in contemporary America, or put together a chapter about how some artifact of pop culture is, in fact, religious. But if I want the security of a tenured position  at the best possible institution, and the prestige of having written a serious work of scholarship, I need to write a book whose title uses big words and that does not evoke any particular time or place.</p>
<p>I need to write an academic book about spirituality.</p>
<p>The word spirituality fills me with anxiety. Sometimes as I work on my laptop (or pretend to) late at night, my wife will ask what I am writing. An article or an entry or a book review, I’ll tell her.</p>
<p>“What are you doing that for?” she’ll ask.</p>
<p>“Well it’s part of my job.”</p>
<p>“So are you getting paid for it?”</p>
<p>“No, but I get to keep the book.” Or: “They should send me a copy of the encyclopedia when it comes out, plus $60!” That fails to impress, as does my monthly paycheck.</p>
<p>“You’re a good writer and you know a lot about religion. Write a book that will sell,” she says, “Make us some money. Get famous.”</p>
<p>Why not? If professors of economics serve as consultants to the very banks they study and professors of medicine are paid by the companies whose drugs they test, why can’t professors of religious studies financially exploit the subjects of our investigations? What is wrong with a little money and publicity? Why can’t we cash in too?</p>
<p>I need to write a popular book about spirituality.</p>
<p>The thought of writing a book about spirituality, whether academic or popular, fills me with anxiety. Shouldn’t these kinds of books just write themselves?</p>
<p>In the academic book I’d like to write, a smooth and vague language, full of whispered half-promises, conjures the free-floating theorizing that can only happen when the discipline of religious studies merges with postmodern theology and cultural studies. The popular book I’d like to write could be found in any of a dozen sections of the local bookstore: New Age, Self-Help, Eastern Religions, Psychology, Fitness, Humor. Or better yet: next to the cash register.</p>
<p>Shouldn’t these kinds of books just write themselves? Maybe not, but the titles can. And that’s a start.</p>
<p>So Louis, the Webmaster, and Laura, the Instructional Technologist, helped me create an automatic, random title generator, which has inside of it over one and a half million possible book titles about spirituality. At last I am no longer anxious about spirituality; I might even feel a little bit spiritual myself, for the first time. Because I have harnessed the power of randomness and automation, which are unthinking, productive, and modern, like spirituality itself.</p>
<p>I created this generator for myself. In using it, I have noticed that in all these potential book titles, the word “spirituality” stands like the eye of the hurricane, the vacant signifier, the placeholder, the empty vessel…</p>
<p>And now I invite everyone to partake.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nestled on the back page of a November 1861 edition <em>Harper’s Weekly</em> appeared an image celebrating the October 24, 1861 inauguration of the first transcontinental telegraph line.  Although the illustration was published with no accompanying article, given the context of the rest of the magazine—devoted almost exclusively to reportage of the progress of the Civil War that had broken out in the USA earlier that year—it would be hard not to hear a political resonance in the words, “perpetual union.” Indeed, the very first telegram transmitted on the new line testified directly to this resonance. Addressed to President Lincoln in Washington, D.C., the telegram spoke of Californians’ “loyalty to the Union and their determination to stand by the government on this, its day of trial.” This was a pledge of allegiance, not only in response to what had already become a devastating war of partition, but also in support of a grand project of technological modernization: the engineering of a new physical and social world in which the most remote hinterlands would be linked directly to the deepest heartlands of government, industry, and culture. Even more profoundly than the postal system and print industries that preceded it, the electromagnetic telegraph invoked a coming age of free exchange and virtual tele-presence. This new vision of wired nations and unchained spirits is dramatically depicted by the image of an angel, moving as lithely as a tight-rope walker along the telegraph wire, her wings folded in wait for an even more effortless journey to come.</p>
<p>By the time its cables had reached the Pacific Coast, the telegraph had already come to occupy a prime place in the American imaginary, providing (among many other things) a metonym for what <a href="http://www.jstor.org/pss/364862?searchUrl=%2Faction%2FdoBasicSearch%3FQuery%3DAlbanese%252C%2BCatherine%26gw%3Djtx%26prq%3DAlbanese%252C%2BCatherine.%2B1975.%2BThe%2BKinetic%2BRevolution%2B%2BTransformation%2Bin%2Bthe%2BLanguage%2Bof%2Bthe%2BTranscendentalists.%2BNew%2BEngland%2BQuarterly%2B48%252C%2Bno.3%2B%2B319-340.%26Search%3DSearch%26hp%3D25%26wc%3Don&amp;Search=yes" target="_blank">Catherine Albanese</a> has called the “kinetic revolution” that was placing new priorities on motion, transformation, and progress in all facets of civil, cultural, economic and political life in the Jacksonian era. Alongside the extension of roads, bridges and tunnels across even the most mountainous terrains, the expansion of the railway system, and increasing opportunities for travel by steam-powered watercraft, the telegraph engendered a new, vertiginous experience of “life in the fast lane” and the collapsing of distant horizons through the universal and invisible, but very tangible medium of electricity. Long before Google, Second Life, or the Web 2.0, telegraphy was implicated in the creation of phantasmatic, electrically-mediated communities of knowledge-seekers, conversation partners, and like-minded souls dispersed across the entire globe.</p>
<p>The very first message to reach California on that inaugural day of the new transcontinental line came from Brigham Young, the Mormon leader, governor of Utah, and patron of Western settlement, who rejoiced in the telegraphic strengthening of “the bonds of friendship between the people of Utah and the people of California,” but who ended his salutation with an injunction that pointed to the work to come: “Join your wires with the Russian Empire, and we will converse with Europe.” The Pacific Coast was already no longer visualized as the end of the line. At the very moment of completion of the American transcontinental line, the telegraph’s horizon was extended further, pointing toward an imminent, truly global, frontier-less, and harmonized future.</p>
<p>The choice to depict the bearer of telegraphy’s utopian gifts in the form of an angel was not unique to <em>Harper’s</em> magazine, nor is it particularly surprising. As <a href="http://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/S/bo3656803.html" target="_blank">John Durham Peters</a> reminds us, the figure of the angel has been linked at least since St. Augustine to the idea of instantaneous travel, and angelic speech has been described as a transference of pure, interior thoughts from one party to another without any degradation or loss. “Angels,” Peters summarizes, “a term that comes from the Greek, <em>angelos</em>, messenger, are unhindered by distance, are exempt from the supposed limitations of embodiment, and effortlessly couple the psychical and the physical, the signified and the signifier, the divine and the human. They are pure bodies of meaning.”</p>
<p>But as it so happens, angels were not the only spirit entities who presided over the completion of the telegraph line, and not all these transcendent powers worked toward the same end. In his memoir published in <em>The Californian</em> magazine in 1881, <a href="http://www.archive.org/stream/californian03romarich/californian03romarich_djvu.txt" target="_blank">James Gamble</a>—the pioneering figure responsible for laying the cable that connected San Francisco to Salt Lake City, as well as much of the rest of the telegraphic infrastructure along the Pacific coast—recounts the many challenges he faced setting up the line. His narrative details the extended effort to manage hostile terrains, difficult weather, pack animals, a less-than-reliable workforce, and, not least, the delicate negotiations needed to win the assent of local Indian populations, specifically the Shoshone people, whose territories at that time extended from Western Utah across Nevada and into Eastern California, precisely along the route of the Overland Pass, which had been chosen for the construction of the transcontinental line. A striking feature of Gamble’s story is the recurring manifestation of magical and spirit forces, control over which seemed decisive for the success of Gamble’s enterprise. At times, Gamble’s journey resembles that of an itinerant magician, an electrical showman trading in mysterious demonstrations designed to both educate and awe his audiences. One such spectacle was performed during the opening of the first telegraph office in San José, California, where a crowd of curious onlookers had gathered to bear witness to new technology at work. Gamble writes:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">Observing the anxious and inquiring expression on the faces of those who had managed to get near enough to thrust their heads through the open window, it occurred to me to act in a very mysterious manner in order to see what effect it would have upon my spectators. … [As] I was preparing the message for transmission … instead of handing it to the boy for delivery, I put it, holding it in my hand, under the table, which was provided with sides sufficiently deep to hide the envelope from their view. As I did this I kept my eyes fixed on the wire, while, with my right hand, I took hold of the key and began working it. The moment the crowd heard the first click of the instrument they all rushed from under the veranda out into the street to see the message in the envelope pass along the wire. On seeing them rush out tumbling one over the other to catch a glimpse of the message, we on the inside burst out into one long and continued roar of laughter. … The telegraph was to them the very hardest kind of a conundrum. It was impossible of solution. Their final conclusion was that it was an enchained spirit—but whether a good one or an evil one they could not quite determine—over  which I had such control that it was obliged to do my bidding. Under this impression they departed one by one, looking upon both the telegraph and myself as something, as the Scotchman would say, ‘uncanny’.</p>
<p>This “very mysterious manner” of acting and its “uncanny” effects belong to a long history of technological wonder-making in the service of public edification, profit, and boundary-maintenance with respect to scientific literati and their abject others. In this case, Gamble’s mastery of the art of legerdemain provided fellow telegraph operators with the opportunity to revel in the naïveté of their technologically illiterate onlookers. But working wonders also proved useful to the company’s efforts to pacify potentially hostile populations and thereby to secure control over territories marked out for extension of the telegraphic infrastructure. A telling instance was Gamble’s way of dealing with Sho-kup, chief of the Western Shoshone tribe that lived in the Ruby Valley in northeastern Nevada, which lay directly along the Overland Pass. In order to win Sho-kup’s assent to the construction of the telegraph line, Gamble had one of his agents lead him on a tour of a working telegraph station, whereupon Sho-kup</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">was told that when the telegraph was completed he could talk to [his distantly located wife] as well from there as if by her side; but this was more than his comprehension could seize. Talk to her when nearly three hundred miles away! No; that was not possible. He shook his head, saying he would rather talk to her in the old way. His idea of the telegraph was that it was an animal, and he wished to know on what it fed. They told him it ate lightning; but, as he had never seen any one make a supper of lightning, he was not disposed to believe that.</p>
<p>For Gamble and his men, it seems, the telegraph was a magical tool for transcending not only distance but also the privations of “the primitive mind.” Sho-kup, however, was hardly the primitive that Gamble makes him out to be. While it seems that Sho-kup was indeed mystified by the telegraph’s secret modus operandi, his reaction was not based on a total lack of familiarity with the media technologies that were ushering in a new modernity in the mid-nineteenth century. For, as we learn later on in Gamble’s memoir, Sho-kup was already an eager participant in the emerging economy of photographic portraiture, availing himself of the powers of self-representation that were being dramatically reworked thanks to the spreading technology of the photographic camera. Gamble recalls how, at the closing of his encounter with Sho-kup, he:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">presented me with a daguerreotype of himself in full dress, taken in Salt Lake several years before, begging me to receive it as a mark of his appreciation of the kindness I had manifested toward him. This was accompanied by the request that on my return home I would send him a portrait of myself. I promised to do so, and on arriving in San Francisco had myself photographed … [and then] placed [the picture] in a gold double locket, with a chain, so that it could be worn around the neck, and forwarded it to him through the Indian Agent, who afterward presented it to Sho-kup with great ceremony.</p>
<p>In this exchange, which of the actors is “the primitive” and which is “the modern?” Perhaps an answer can be found by taking stock of the remarkable collection of material, technological, and phantasmatic entities populating Gamble’s narrative: telegraph operating instruments; invisible flows of electricity; sleights of hand; superstitious minds; enchained spirits; monstrous, metallic animals that live on a diet of lightning; and photographs destined to serve as talismans, yoking their wearers into bonds of distant friendship and strategic alliances. It is hardly insignificant that most of these magical forces were mobilized not by Gamble’s putatively gullible audiences or by the primitives he encountered along his journey, but by Gamble himself. By projecting the presence of spirits, assigning magical explanations, and offering supernatural gifts, Gamble had joined the ranks of what was emerging–not only in the USA—as an advancing army of proselyte-engineers, whose mission was to expand and secure general acceptance for the telegraph through the promulgation of magic. Like the Biblical Aaron beating the Pharaoh’s magicians at their own game, the protagonists of telegraphic modernity forged consensus for their project through the creation of “better,” “more impressive” magic.</p>
<p>By the time of Gamble’s epic journey, an appreciation of telegraphy’s transcendent, magical nature had already been well established in American popular culture. Not least in the case of Spiritualism, a movement whose development precisely overlapped with the rise of the telegraph. One particularly prescient observer of the telegraph’s apparent promise to render distance obsolete was the Universalist minister and trance speaker, John Murray Spear (1804-1887). In 1854, Spear was the recipient of detailed plans, provided to him in a trance state by the spirit of Benjamin Franklin, for the construction of a “soul-blending telegraph.” The soul-bending telegraph was an intercontinental telepathic transmission system to be powered by a corps of sensitized mediums installed in male/female pairs in high towers. This network of harmonized spirit mediums promised stiff competition with existing telegraph services, which were still beset by operational difficulties, and which had yet to announce success in the ongoing effort to connect distant continents. Spear thus imagined an imminent future of communicative harmony on a global scale, a utopian dream to which the crude workings of the electromagnetic telegraph only imperfectly pointed. As it turns out, Spear’s plan was never implemented. But its mere example provided Spear with a vantage point from which to denounce the undemocratic character of telegraphic globalization as it was actually coming to fruition in his day. Commenting on the (at the time, yet-to-be realized) project of the American industrialist, Cyrus Field, to lay a submarine telegraph cable across the Atlantic Ocean, Spear writes:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The purpose is a laudable one, and should be encouraged; but it is seen that such a means of communication would be exceedingly expensive, and, of necessity, would rarely accommodate the poorer classes, while it would enrich others. It is a hazardous scheme—the most so of any proposed. <em>In that submarine wire lies the snake of a most dangerous monopoly.</em></p>
<p>Who living in our contemporary moment, marked on the one hand by fantasies of hyper-connectivity and techno-transcendence, and on the other by the specter of sinister corporate intentions and digital divides, cannot hear the echo of Spear’s cry?</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><!-- 		@page { margin: 0.79in } 		P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } -->Gold-gray tinging the sky to the east.  The call to prayer goes out at four minutes past seven.  Cats join in.  The masjid is a block away and the cats are next door.  I lie in bed and listen for where the azaan that is meant to make you long for God sounds like cats calling for ravishment and who knows, evolutionarily maybe cats did try to sound like crying babies, which they do.</p>
<p>My throat hurts.  If I tried to hum with the muezzin or call with the cats, it would hurt.  I get up and take eight tablets of yin chiao from a friend who does acupuncture.  It will, as she puts it, push the sickness back out through the skin.  It worked the last time.</p>
<p>Later, I go out for more provisions, past the Baptist church with minarets; it used to be a Masonic temple.  At Tony’s health food store I greet Khan who, like several sons of the owner, works there six days a week.  I compliment him on his Om tattoo and he is delighted that I know about Shiva.  I tell him that Shiva is actually very important to me and that Shiva Natajara is on my mantel and another Shiva adorns my Christmas tree.  His face clouds over.  “Wait,” I quickly explain why I think Shiva would be okay being a Christmas ornament.  I redirect the conversation to finding broth.  But now Khan follows me around the store, entreating me to take that ornament down.  He keeps moving to front shelves in my vicinity and is now frankly warning about disrespecting Shiva.  I feel like a total idiot religion professor.</p>
<p>On the way home, I pass churches of Pentecostals, Adventists, and Daddy Grace, as well as another masjid.  It is February 3, 2011, and no one is surprised that someone walking around in Brooklyn would run into so many brands of religion.  What might surprise is that the run-ins pierce and balm in so many ways.  The neighborhood does this to some bodies and not others, I guess.  But if you have a body that feels like the skin does not hold things in or keep them out, if you are made partly of memories of cuts and sutures, it might do this to you.</p>
<p>Religion is a chain of memory, says the sociologist Danièle Hervieu-Léger, and <em>catholicité </em>is a palimpsest.  Bedford-Stuyvesant used to be all Catholic, and still the most and biggest churches are Catholic.  Seven within ten blocks of my apartment.  Now I pass one where a few women enter through the side door, the main door being locked on weekdays.</p>
<p>Thirty years ago, I lived far from Bed-Stuy, in a place where every town had a view of cornfields.  Thirty years ago, I was going to school at St. Mary’s in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.  Probably standing in a line.  We were always in lines.  Lines for changing classes, lines for going to lunch, lines for visiting the lavatory, lines for school assemblies, lines for going to Mass, lines for waiting for the bus at the end of the day.  Lines on weekends, too.  Line up for your heat at the swim meet.  Line up for Rice Krispie treats at the bake sale table.  Line up for confession.  Line up for communion.  In lines, you waited.  Waiting was normal and so was the transaction at the end of the line.</p>
<p>But some lines were different, and you anticipated unusual things while waiting.  In line to get ashes on your forehead, for example.  There was always an emotional chill as the priest spoke mortal words about dust, and a physical flinch to feel fine black palm ash fleck the bridge of your nose.  Or, in line to kiss the cross on Good Friday.  Making sure to get behind Mrs. Viozzi who is ancient and four feet tall but still kneels on both knees and grasps the cross with both hands and kisses the wood with two full lips, a juicy smack that sounds across the whole nave.  In line to have your throat blessed on the feast of St. Blaise…</p>
<p>Crossing Marcy Avenue now, I catch native son Jay-Z’s music blasting out an apartment window three stories up.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>Can I hit it in the morning without givin you half of my dough,</em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>and even worse if I was broke would you want me? … </em></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><em>If I couldn’t flow futuristic, would ya </em></p>

<p>I don’t know.  Is love deeper than deep pockets?  The neighborhood that used to be “Bed-Stuy/do or die” is now “Bed-Stuy/too late to buy” and churches turn into yoga studios at Washington Avenue.</p>
<p>Line up to go to the auditorium to see <em>Jesus Christ Superstar</em>.  It was the monthly school movie some winter Friday in 1977.  Eight years old, watching girls in sequined hotpants gyrate as the heavenly host, watching Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene drag herself after wooden beams as if she herself were lashed to them, I wanted to dance, I wanted to be lashed, I wanted to kneel and kiss that wood.</p>
<p>When we lined up to get our throats blessed on the feast of St. Blaise, this too was different waiting for an unusual transaction.  Frankly, it was scary.  At the end of two lines advancing up the auditorium center aisle stood two priests.  They each held a pair of thick white candles, tied together at a right angle to make a cross, and secured at the crux with red ribbon.  When it was your turn, you stepped up and the priest held the crux at your throat and said, “Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God preserve you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil.”  Then, making the sign of the cross, you peeled away.</p>
<p>Scary.  First of all, the wax against your neck was scented and tacky-cold and felt like a funeral.  Then, why was this saint’s day of all saints’ days so important to take time out? Was there imminent danger to all human throats, as opposed to other body parts? Shouldn’t we also have blessings for eyes and brains and hands?  I asked this.  No.  Only the throat.  It made you think of things that could crush or slice you there.  It made you pay attention to movies where after a quick yank and flash, someone’s jugular was spurting.  It made you retain a vocabulary word like garrot.  It made you notice when you had a sore throat.</p>
<p>Many years later, when I wasn’t in school and wasn’t going to Mass and the millennium turned and I just wanted to get through my first year of teaching, I still noticed in particular when I had a sore throat.  In fact the one I got during finals week of that fall semester soon turned into a cough.  But I was busy.  And homesick.  No time for a doctor’s visit.  I left Texas for a trip back east.  I wanted to see my family in Pennsylvania and my love in North Carolina.  I packed it all into a mad visit with lots of long-distance driving.  When I got back to Fort Worth, I felt much better.</p>
<p>Except I still had a cough, and swallowing had started to feel funny.  Spring teaching commenced and I coughed through the first class.  Finally I visited the doctor and was sent home with antibiotics.  But that night my chest exploded with pain and my throat hurled back anything I tried to swallow.  The next morning I presented at the doctor’s again.  A more thorough exam revealed that some unknown problem had already resulted in severe pneumonia, one collapsed lung, a swollen heart lining, and infection blooming throughout my chest cavity.  I was taken by ambulance to All Saints Hospital and did not leave for over a month.</p>
<p>The first two weeks, nothing happened.  My sister Mary flew in from Atlanta and virtually moved into my hospital room.  The chair of my department, Daryl, visited every day.  Tests were run but no one could find the problem.  Antibiotics slowed the infection but didn’t kill it off.  A brown bacterial stew that smelled like raw sewage had begun to burble up into my mouth.  One day, finally, it started to drown me.  Mary and a friend, Leah, frantically alerted the nurse.  I lost consciousness as doctors cut notches between my ribs on both sides to insert chest tubes.  When I woke up, I was in the ICU, lung fluid still draining into canisters on the floor.</p>
<p>My doctor would come see me and talk.  His name was Noble.  Noble Ezukanma, internist, point person for an array of specialists.  Nigerian, Christian, married with three kids, beautiful and wise.  I asked him all the questions I could think of.  “This diagnostic process, we are trying things, you know, but it is really more an art than a science,” he would say.  “We have to wait.”  He didn’t know how things were going to turn out.  He said so.  He was an artist in process.  It was comforting.</p>
<p>But it was another doctor who arrived early one morning, when I was alone, to tell me that one test had finally nailed it:  prolonged coughing—or a fishbone accidentally swallowed, or vomiting, or chance?—had torn a hole in my larynx.  Everything I ate or breathed was feeding the infection.  They required my signature for surgery.  Immediately.</p>
<p>What happened next, I am not sure how.  I was frightened and teary plus high on morphine.  Did I remember what day it was?  Did Daryl somehow know?  Did the hospital chaplain staff piece it together despite no checked box on the intake form?  I don’t know.  But within a few hours, Daryl had brought the campus priest to my bedside.  Fr. Charlie carried two white candles, crossed and tied with red ribbon.  It was February 3, 2001, and I got my throat blessed.</p>
<p>So, as you see, were it not for St. Blaise, I would not be here to tell you this story.  I would not have returned to my classes that semester, would not be chewing over the meaning of spirituality for an online collection, would not be remembering waiting in lines, would not be walking home from Tony’s in Bed-Stuy with good broth for a sore throat.</p>
<p>But wait … this is no way to end the story.  Don’t mess with people, people in the guild, my guild, my people.  Don’t mess with my head.  Leave out suggesting that St. Blaise was actually involved.  Leave out hinting that without St. Blaise I would be dead.  It was doctors who operated and sewed me whole.  If St. Blaise supposedly saved my life, then why didn’t all those blessings years earlier work?  If I am having a fit of wanting to thank a saint, I can do it on my own time.  Would I say this stuff in the classroom?  Do I really believe … ?</p>
<p>I do believe … in religion as a social construction with a long history, and in spirituality, too, begotten not made, one in being with religion.  And in experience, and the self, and pluralism, and God, and any story any of us could possibly tell, all of them truly assumed, asserted and produced in very complex genealogies.  Credo.</p>
<p>But sometimes I forget to care.  My skin does not hold things in or keep them out.  And having this kind of body—a body of memories of cuts, not all my own—goes back long before the hospital, long before I was born, long before St. Blaise himself.  Still, I have faith.  Tell the children that they can see through the powers that be.  Tell the children that they can choose to believe this and not that.  Tell them that their bodies are theirs for the making.  That if something goes wrong the doctors can slice through layers and suture back out and then you are whole again.</p>
<p>Yet I keep bumping into religions and they don’t bounce off.  Why live?  Why sicken?  Why call for ravishment?  Why calm at the touch of red-ribboned candles?  I have nothing against stitches.  The rows run across my neck and over my heart.  There are little crosses that closed chest tube holes and a big stripe under each shoulder blade.  They saved my life.  But some bodies are pounds of flesh with oozing edges and no fix for that.  Meanwhile, I teach, I write, I walk around and see what happens.  “This process, you know, we are trying things, but it is more art than science,” the good doctor said.  “We have to wait.”</p>

<p>Deathbed Conversion</p>
<p>I am not a secular man, but in moments of crisis I turn to agnosticism for the comfort it gives in freeing me from superstition. Once, when gravely ill and sure I would die at any minute, I embraced agnosticism, and, with Nietzsche in hand, swore I would remain an agnostic even if I recovered. But once I did recover, I lapsed again into religious belief, feeling the danger was over and it was safe to return to my old ways. Still, the fear of dying under the veil of dogma still grips my soul late in the night and I yearn for the courage to embrace reality without prophylactics.</p>

<p>Flawed Design</p>
<p>The Theory of Flawed Design is not a scientifically proven alternative to evolution. It is based on the everyday life experience that natural selection could not have produced such a catastrophic outcome. Optimists and the religiously inclined will naturally prefer evolution as an explanation, since ascribing design to the state of humanity is almost unbearable. For the rest of us, we must continue to insist that the Theory of Flawed Design be taught cheek and jowl, neck and neck, mano a mano, with Mr. Darwin’s speculations.</p>
<p>The Theory of Flawed Design postulates a creator who is mentally impaired, either through some genetic defect or because of substance abuse, and is predisposed to behave in a sociopathic manner; although some Benign Flawed Design theorists, as they call themselves, posit the radical alternative that the creator was distracted or inattentive and the flaws are not the result of malevolent will but incompetence or incapacity.</p>
